Washing and care
Heavy cotton is easy to look after and easy to ruin. There are only three things that matter.
The three that matter
- Wash cold, at 30 degrees or below. Heat is what shrinks cotton and what fades a dye.
- Dry fleece flat. A hot tumble dryer will pull a 480 gram sweatshirt out of shape faster than a year of wearing it.
- Wash it less than you think. Sweatshirts and sweatpants want washing every four or five wears, not every one.
By fabric
| Fabric | Wash | Dry |
|---|---|---|
| 480 gsm fleece | Cold, inside out, gentle | Flat, out of the sun |
| 420 gsm fleece | Cold, inside out, gentle | Flat, out of the sun |
| 240 gsm jersey | Cold, inside out | Tumble low, or hang |
Pilling
New fleece pills a little where it rubs, usually under the arms and at the cuffs. This is loose fibre working its way out, not the garment failing, and it stops after three or four washes.
Take it off with a cheap fabric shaver rather than picking at it. Picking pulls the loop out of the knit, and that does not grow back.
Stains
Cold water and time beat hot water and scrubbing on almost everything. Soak it, do not rub it, and never put a stained garment through a hot wash — heat sets the stain permanently.
